Sisters of Mercy call for independent inquiry into rape case

The Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy has called for an independent enquiry into the events that led to today's sentencing of their former member. In a statement this afternoon, the Congregation said that they shared the deep hurt and suffering of all those, whose lives had been damaged by the case.
It said that Nora Wall was a resident manager of St Michael's group homes from 1978 to 1990. In 1990 she was removed because of serious management problems. She left the congregation of her own volition in 1994. The statement added that the superior general had no knowledge or suspicion of sexual abuse at St. Michael's when Nora Wall was removed.
The Congregation added that a jury had found that serious and destructive events occurred and called for an independent enquiry into the events that led to today's judgement. The Congregation believes that the inquiry should be independent of those, including themselves, who were responsible for and had duties to the children at St. Michael's. It concludes that what matters most is that the future should be safety for all children. It says that believes that St. Michael's is now a safe and loving home for the children who live there.
