Fine Gael leader John Bruton and lawyers for the public interest have made statements to the Moriarty tribunal expressing confidence in the inquiry and its chairman.

Fine Gael leader John Bruton and lawyers for the public interest have made statements to the Moriarty tribunal expressing confidence in the inquiry and its chairman. This follows revelations last week that Mr Justice Moriarty had shares in Cement Roadstone holdings.

Lawyers have identified mechanisms which would ensure that the Moriarty Tribunal can continue its work, even if a conflict of interest arises. This morning, counsel for the Public Interest addressed the Tribunal in the wake of revelations that Mr Justice Michael Moriarty had shares in Cement Roadstone Holdings. Mr Justice Moriarty has said this would preclude him from investigating CRH or their controversial purchase of lands at Glen Ding woods, if those matters came up for investigation.

Counsel for the Attorney General, Frank Clarke said that initial discussions have already taken place with Tribunal lawyers to identify what course of action could be taken, should a conflict of interest arise. These discussions he said were ongoing. Mr Clarke said that he did not believe there was any lessening in public confidence in the Tribunal.

Counsel for Fine Gael leader, John Bruton TD, also made a statement, concerning Mr Justice Moriarty's shareholding. Mr Bruton's counsel said that lawyers for Fine Gael were told of the shareholding by the Attorney General, who subsequently informed Mr Bruton of the matter. Mr Bruton was satisfied that the chairman had taken steps to ensure all relevant information was disclosed, prior to his appointment. Mr Bruton wished to reaffirm his continued confidence in the Chairman and his belief that Mr Justice Moriarty was acting with propriety and integrity during this tribunal.

Responding to this and earlier reassurances from counsel for John Bruton, Mr Justice Moriarty said that he was very appreciative and happy that eminent national figures of high standing had acted most honourably and promptly to resolve and misunderstandings that have arisen.
