It has been reported that the British Defence Secretary supports efforts by former British soldiers to remain anonymous. The former members of the Parachute Regiment who are trying to ensure that they will not be identified if they give evidence to the Bloody Sunday inquiry.
The inquiry into the deaths of 14 civilians who were shot by British soldiers during a civil rights march in Derry in 1972 begins public hearings at the Guildhall in the city in September. According to The Daily Telegraph, Mr Robertson has warned the British Cabinet that he is concerned for the safety of the 17 former soldiers, who fear that they could be identified at the inquiry.
