Funeral takes place of Lord Killanin
The funeral has been taking place in County Galway of Lord Killanin, the former president of the International Olympic Committee. Lord Killanin, who was 84, died at his home in Dublin on Sunday. The County, the sporting sprit of which he said he always carried with him around the world paid its last tribute this morning to Lord Killanin.
Senior officials of the Olympic council of Ireland, old friends from all over the west of Ireland and Traditional Musicians gathered for a final church service in Spiddal. In his homely parish priest Fr. Tom Coyne said that they had gathered to celebrate the life of a great man who would be remembered for his many outstanding achievements and the leadership he gave in may spheres of life.
He said that he particularly admired his "mild patient stubbornness in the face of political pressure in the run up to the Moscow Olympics". The cortège has left Spiddal church for Bohermore Cemetery in Galway where Lord Killanin's remains will be placed in the family vault.
