Dublin Corporation warns it is running out of land

Dublin Corporation has warned that it is running out of land on which to build local authority houses. There are an estimated six thousand five hundred families on the Corporation's housing list. However, the local authority claim they only have land to build eight hundred homes.

The amount of people waiting to be housed by Dublin Corporation has increased by more than 50 per cent in the past three years. In 1996 there were 4000 households on the city's housing list. Dublin Corporation says that it expects that the latest assessment, due to be completed in coming weeks, will put that figure at 6,500.

The Corporation's principal housing officer Brendan Kenny has blamed the housing crisis for the rise. He also predicted that in the next two or three years the Corporation will have no land left.
