The Sinn Féin President has said that the Taoiseach's suggested way of running the Rosemary Nelson investigation did not go far enough. Gerry Adams said that only an independent and international inquiry would suffice and he said this should be established quickly and urgently.

The Taoiseach said that he believes the Kent Chief Constable should have executive powers and work with his own team. The senior police officer has been brought in to supervise the Rosemary Nelson murder investigation. Mr. Ahern said he hoped to clear this up when he meets Mo Mowlam next Tuesday.

However, Mr. Adams said that the RUC should not have any part in the investigation considering the threats its members had made against Mrs. Nelson and allegations of collusion in her death. He added that the community from which she came was a campaigning one and they wouldn't be prepared to wait 10 years to get the truth like the case of Pat Finnucane.

Amnesty International expressed concern that RUC investigation was not sufficiently independent yesterday. The human rights organisation said that the British Government should initiate an independent judicial inquiry into allegations that defence lawyers are systematically harassed and intimidated by security forces.

It also called for a separate independent inquiry into the 1989 killing of lawyer Patrick Finucane by the UFF, which is surrounded by allegations of collusion with members of the security forces.
