Eddie Irvine scored a dramatic maiden win at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne today.

Eddie Irvine scored a dramatic maiden win at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne today.

The 33-year-old Ferrari driver won his first race at the 82nd attempt after the McLarens of world champion Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard both retired with mechanical problems.

Irvine won by one second from Germany's Heinz-Harald Frentzen on his Jordan debut, with Ralf Schumacher third in his first race for Williams.

Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella was fourth ahead of Rubens Barrichello, who started the race in the pit-lane after a technical problem in his Stewart- Ford, with Arrows Pedro De La Rosa 6th.
