Dublin Corporation says that they were not expecting that water supplies would be cut off at the Ballymun complex yesterday afternoon. The lack of a warning caused widespread flooding and damage in over 35 flats in the complex and residents are angry that they were given no notice that the water supply would be cut off.
The Dublin Fire Brigade confirmed earlier that a flats in Ballymun were extensively damaged by flooding by the flooding. The problems arose after the water supply to the towers was cut off and later restored. Ballymun residents woke up yesterday morning to find that their water supplies had been cut off overnight.
The flooding occurred when the supply was restored at around three o'clock that afternoon. Taps in several homes had been left on, water from those flats flooded and poured down to homes underneath.
Dublin Fire brigade spent several hours at the complex yesterday evening; they've described the water damage and damage to the electrical systems as 'extensive'.
Local Workers Party councillor Sean McCionnaith has said up to forty flats were damaged and has criticised Dublin Corporation for failing to warn residents that the water was going to be cut off. The Corporation has rejected that criticism, it says that every effort had been made to inform people of the current shortage and to advise them.
The Corporation will be examining the cause and extent of the damage later this morning.
