Wreckage from the 1988 bombing
Libya has rejected an ultimatum by the United States and Britain to hand over two Libyans accused of carrying out the Lockerbie bombing. The two countries warned Libya on Friday that it had 30 days to deliver the two men for trial, but they did not say what would happen if the demand was refused.
A statement from Libya's foreign affairs ministry said the two suspects could not be handed over before final agreement was reached on arrangements that would guarantee them justice. The United States and Britain want the suspects tried in the Netherlands before a Scottish court.
Two hundred and seventy people were killed when a bomb exploded on a Pan Am jet over Lockerbie in Scotland in 1988.
