Rescue operations continuing today
The death toll after two avalanches struck the same area of the Austrian Alps, within 24 hours, has risen to 32. Rescuers spent another night trying to find survivors. It is estimated that six people are still missing.
The avalanches struck the district around the ski resorts of Galtur and Valzur after the heaviest snowfall in 50 years. Early this morning, emergency crews resumed helicopter flights into Galtur that were interrupted yesterday by bad weather.
The teams are hoping today to complete evacuating tourists from the area that is cut off by deep snow drifts.
