A new avalanche struck near the Austrian village of Galtuer today, destroying four houses and leaving six people buried. Three people were pulled out alive.

The new snow-slide occurred as efforts continued to locate survivors from a huge avalanche yesterday. Sixteen people have already been confirmed dead following yesterday's avalanche, but another 26 are still missing.

The avalanches struck Galtuer, which is also a popular ski resort, after the heaviest snowfall in 50 years. Thirty-seven others were pulled alive from the snow since yesterday, but several are said to be seriously injured.

The Austrian army is co-ordinating the rescue effort from the nearby town of Landek. However, bad weather is hampering the rescue efforts.
