Gardai have named the three men who were killed in this mornings road crash in Carlow. They were John Hanlon, who was 38 and a native of Paulstown in Kilkenny but with an address in Luton in Bedfordshire in England; Thomas Healy who was 48 and from Gowran in Kilkenny; and Luke Byrne who was 64 and from Paulstown.
The accident occurred at Cloughnagh on a straight stretch of the Carlow Kilkenny road (the N9), around three miles south of Carlow town. The BMW car was travelling towards Carlow town at around 2am this morning when the accident happened. The car, with the three men inside, apparently skidded across the main road, out of control the vehicle travelled over forty feet along a hedge before it crashed into a tree.
The car's roof was ripped off in the impact. The BMW then slid into a ditch where it lay for over an hour before a passing taxi-driver noticed that something was wrong. The car was taken to Carlow Garda station for investigation. A spokesman said the driver and the front seat passanger were found dead inside the car.
The sixty-four-year-old rear seat passanger had apparently been flung from the vehicle and was found in the field.
