Gardai in Galway are still questioning a man in connection with the the murder of the 17 year old schoolgirl, Siobhan Hynes. The man, who is single and in his mid-20's, was arrested in the Carraroe area early this morning.
Siobhan Hynes' body was discovered at Tishmane strand two miles from the village on Sunday of last week. In an operation which got under way at 6.30am, 15 members of the team investigating the murder of the teenage schoolgirl, swooped on a house in the locality. After an initial search they they arrested a man in his 20's, sealed off the house for further forensic examination and took possession of a car which has been taken to Galway where it is being examined by technical experts.
The man was taken to the West Galway Divisional Headquarters at Salthill, where he is being held under the 1984 Criminal Justice Act. Under the act the man, who was formally arrested at 7.50am today, can be held until 10 to 8 tonight. He must then either be released or charged.
The team heading up the hunt for Siobhan's killer say he is being questioned in connection with their overal investigation. So far the Gardai say the exact cause of Siobhan's death and a motive for her killing have yet to be established. Additional tests, which could also establish an exact time of death, are still being conducted by the Assistant State Pathologist Dr Maree Cassidy.
A team of over 50 Gardai are now involved in the murder hunt and the information contained in hundreds of statements and questionnaires is being studied at the special incident centre which has been established at Carraroe Garda Station.
