Asylum seekers rights protest

Updated: 14:30, Monday, 1 February 1999

Several hundred people have protested outside the Department of Justice at the treatment of asylum seekers here.

The protesters claim that people are being deported without a proper chance to argue their case.

But a spokesman for the Department said that only a few days ago United Nations officials praised Ireland's asylum procedures.

Aine Ni Chonaill of the Immigration Control Platform said protests such as this afternoon's had happened in France and had undermined democracy there.

The protest was organised by the Asylum Rights Alliance
