Sixteen national teams will compete in a total of 31 matches to be crowned European champions. The format of four groups of four teams will be used for the last time in this tournament. The competition format will change for the next edition in 2016 as the lineup of participants competing in the final tournament will be increased to 24.

After taking 3 points from their strong performance against Macedonia in March, Ireland will meet them for the second time this year on Saturday June 4th. The result in March has moved Ireland to the top of the Euro 2012 Qualifying Group B with Russia & Slovakia.

This year, Jedward will perform their song 'Lipstick' in their bid to secure a place in the Eurovision hall of fame. The second of the Eurovision semi-finals on the 12th May is the duo's big chance to make it to the final on Saturday May 14th.
1. Last year's Eurovision Song Contest on 29th May was the most successful for 7 years, attracting an average audience of just under 800,000 viewers
2. The programme achieved average ratings of 20.93, 14.84 and 22.77 for Adults, Adults 15-34 and HK with Kids respectively
3. Last year the semi-final on the 27th May and the final on the 29th May cumulatively reached over 2 million viewers*
4. The 2010 Eurovision Song Contest was among the Top 10 programmes watched by Adults, Adults 25-44 and HK with Kids across all channels last year
5. Since the qualification rounds were introduced in 2004, the most successful semi-final among Irish audiences was in 2008 when Dustin took to the stage with 'Irelande Douze Pointe'. The programme gained average ratings of 13.8 and 15.9 for Adults 15-24 and Adults 25-44 respectively
