Tim Thurston

Tim Thurston presents the ever-popular Gloria on Sunday morning. It is the perfect musical accompaniment to the day of rest bringing the listener the best choral music down through the ages.

Tim Thurston is dedicated to sharing his wide musical passions. Born in Cambridge in 1942, its concert halls, jazz clubs and King's College Chapel set his musical tastes and he became an avid choral singer during his schooldays. Tim's broadcasting career began in the 80s singing with the RTE Chorus and the Camerata Singers and compiling and presenting several programmes of Early Music. He was the first Chairman of the Early Music Organisation of Ireland, ran 5 International Early Music Festivals from 1988 to 1992 and initiated the setting up of Ireland's first period instrument orchestra.

In the early 90s he was a key influence in the launching of the Sunday night RTE FM3 Jazz slot and contributed over 80 programmes of "Con Tempo" covering the jazz of today. He has sung in choirs all his life - he was a member of the choir of St Bartholomew's Church in Ballsbridge for over 15 years.
His depth of knowledge of the choral repertoire and large library of recordings led him to present the first series of "Gloria" in 1997 - It was one of the few programmes to be transferred from FM3 Music to Lyric FM and has been broadcast every Sunday since Lyric was launched in 1999. In 2011 he published a "companion" book, GLORIA - An Introduction to 1000 of European Sacred Music.
