The Lyric Feature Friday 2 May 2014

30th of December 2016
Ireland's National Anthems

If national anthems unite people at times of celebration and commemoration, they can also cause division. Ireland has had a number of official and unofficial anthems that have caused both harmony and discord. Michael Murphy explores Ireland's national anthems from God Save the King to The Soldier's Song in the company of historians Diarmaid Ferriter and Carol Mullaney-Dignam, musicologist Harry White, Olympic and World Championship rower Sinead Lynch, Director of the Defence Forces School of Music Mark Armstrong, conductor Liam Daly and literary critic Colbert Kearney who is also a grandson of Peadar Kearney who wrote The Soldier's Song.

Written and Presented by Michael Murphy (Mary Immaculate College)
Produced by Eoin O Kelly and Michael Murphy
