Wednesday 5th July, 7pm - Leaving on a High Note
Towards the end of his life and shortly after World War II, the German composer Richard Strauss returned to his beloved genre of Lieder. He composed one of his finest works: the Four Last Songs, four Romantic poems set for his favourite ‘instrument’, the soprano voice, and full orchestra. They are Richard Strauss’s final work, his farewell to the world. Within the sombre, reflective mood of the songs Strauss is looking back at his own life and on the intimate, if often tempestuous, partnership he had with his wife and life-long muse, the opera singer Pauline de Ahna. Neither would live to see the songs’ premiere. In the Four Last Songs Strauss shows once more his compositional mastery as the poems reveal themselves in their foreboding of death and the celebration of life.
