Mon to Thurs 7-10pm, Fri 8-10pm

The Lyric Concert with Paul Herriott Thursday 10 April 2014

Bringing Composing the Island to an end, tonight at 8pm Paul Herriott presents ‘Out of the Cradle: A Choral Finale’. Having traversed a century of music in Ireland, the closing choral concert brings Composing the Island back full circle, with two works from the 1920s from both parts of Ireland.  Join a host of performers – the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Philharmonic Choir, Mark Hindley (conductor/chorus master), Helena Wood (leader), Claudia Boyle (soprano), Ben McAteer (baritone) and Dean Power (tenor). The concert begins with Norman Hay’s The Wind Among The Reeds (1921), his setting of a collection of Yeats poems for mezzo-soprano, baritone, chorus and orchestra. And to conclude, Rhoda Coghill’s Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking from 1923 written for tenor, choir and orchestra. It’s a setting of the Walt Whitman text which begins, “Out of the cradle endlessly rocking, Out of the mocking-bird's throat, the musical shuttle, Out of the Ninth-month midnight, Over the sterile sands and the fields beyond, where the child leaving his bed wander'd alone, bareheaded, barefoot...” Join us live from 8pm.
