Watch the Waltons Music for Schools Competition Finalists Concert, live on Tuesday May 2nd at 1pm

This Finalists Concert is the culmination of the 2017 Waltons Music for Schools Competition, a national competition and celebration of music in Irish schools. Six primary and six post-primary school music groups, selected from the many schools around Ireland that entered the Competition this year, perform before their peers and two distinguished adjudicators and compete to win substantial prizes of musical instruments and equipment from Waltons. The 2017 Competition theme is ‘Music Has No Borders’, and the groups have interpreted it in diverse and creative ways.

About the Competition

The Waltons Music for Schools Competition, now in its sixth year, is presented by Waltons Music and Waltons New School of Music, in association with RTÉ lyric fm and the National Concert Hall. All primary and post-primary schools recognised by the Department of Education and Skills in the Republic of Ireland are eligible to enter, and to date schools from every county have taken part. The Competition’s objectives are 1) to promote the enormous benefits of creative music making for young people, 2) to provide Finalists with the opportunity to perform their finished works at a prestigious national venue, and 3) to incentivise schools with annual awards totalling €10,000 from Waltons. Open to a wide range of performing groups and music genres, the Competition offers schools the opportunity to develop a creative and original musical project that has learning potential at every stage of the process. The Friday Concert with Paul Herriott

Paul tries out the 'Mozart Effect' on listeners this evening with an all Mozart programme from Laeiszhalle, Hamburg.

WATCH: FRIDAY CONCERT, FRIDAY APRIL 28TH AT 8PM

Paul Herriott presents tonight's concert live from the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Full of shimmering, shadow-cast beauty, Dublin-born John Kinsella’s sublime Elegy for Strings provides a poetic prelude to Sofia Gubaidulina’s searching, soaring Violin Concerto, Offertorium, with Vadim Gluzman – ‘one of today’s top violinists’ (The Washington Post) – at its darkly glittering helm. Brahms’ Third Symphony boasts all the intricacy of his chamber music and the complexity of his works for piano in a deeply-felt masterpiece whose confessional intimacy is intensely moving.
John Kinsella: Elegy for Strings
Gubaidulina: Offertorium (Irish Premiere)
Brahms: Symphony No. 3 in F
RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
