The Lyric Concert with Paul Herriott

Paul Herriott presents the Proms debut of violinist Baiba Skride who joins the Oslo Philharmonic and its new Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko, with their focus on Polish music.

WATCH: FRIDAY CONCERT, FRIDAY May 19TH AT 8PM

Paul Herriott presents tonight's concert live from the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Elgar’s masterpiece oratorio, The Dream of Gerontius, was the largest work he composed and its scale matches its depth of feeling and devotional fervour. Set to John Henry Newman’s poem depicting a soul’s journey through death to Purgatory and the promise of redemption, it is a richly orchestrated and moving testimony to the power of faith. With support from the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir and three leading soloists – tenor Andrew Kennedy, baritone Neal Davies and the ‘utterly compelling’ (Arts Desk) Irish mezzo Rachel Kelly – this will be a night to remember.
Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius
Rebecca Afonwy-Jones (mezzo-soprano)
Mark Le Brocq (tenor) (replacing Andrew Kennedy)
Neal Davies (baritone)
RTÉ Philharmonic Choir (chorus master: Mark Hindley)
Gerhard Markson (conductor)
