    Jörg Widmann is a frequent visitor  to these shores and in tonight’s concert we hear his Flute Concerto which was commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra for their principal flautist, Joshua Smith.

    Tuesday November 18th
    Paul brings us to De Doelen, Rotterdam for a concert which was part of the 19th Rotterdam Philharmonic Gergiev Festival. The Western Front plays a more important role than the Eastern Front in the Dutch collective memory. But in an intense symphonic programme with music by Janácek and the late-romantic Myaskovsky, who was wounded on the Eastern Front, Gergiev emphasises just how intrusive and severe the conflict was there.

    Wednesday November 19th
    Paul brings us to the St Peter and St Paul Cathedral of Brandenburg for a concert of early Classical music performed by the Kammarakademie Potsdam.

    Thursday November 20th
    Tonight Paul presents Mahler’s longest composition and the longest symphony in the standard repertoire, with a typical performance lasting around ninety to one hundred minutes. Sit back and enjoy the performance which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London
