The Blue of the Night with Eamonn Lenihan

This week, we feature recordings by Grammy-winning jazz musician Stan Getz. Hear selections of his work - bossa nova, big band music, cool jazz, bebop & "third stream" - nightly.

    July 27th - August 3rd: Nocturnes

They are described as a single-movement character piece usually written for solo piano. First created by Irishman John Field – forever associated with Frederic Chopin - but the list of nocturne composers is extensive. We’ll draw from that list all week – the dictionary defines them as “inspired by, or evocative of, the night”. Nocturnes - the perfect fit for The Blue Of The Night.

    August 4th - 10th: Louis Armstrong

Jazz music and Louis Armstrong grew up together. Both were from turn-of–the-20th-century New Orleans. An astounding an innovative soloist, “Satchmo” (short for "Satchelmouth") came to be known as a popular entertainer and an “ambassador” for jazz. Hear him nightly, in the week of the anniversary of his birth, interpreting everyone from Cole Porter to Fats Waller.
