Coming up on the next programme…

Jan 31. We close the month with Jimmy Witherspoon and a little "Trouble In Mind"; Beth Orton, from "Sugaring Season"; part of a violin concerto by Emil Mlynarski; a feisty "Robbins Nest" played by Hank Jones et al; more from this week’s featured recording by Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Morelenbaums (see BLUE TUNES, below); cellist Leonard Elschenbroich. from his new recording of music by Prokofiev and Kabalevsky; the gentle, medium-tempo swing of Sarah Vaughan's "When Lights Are Low"; the Irish Chamber Orchestra, from "Night Moves"; and new jazz from Denmark, including something from an album of Johnny Mandel's music by sax-player Harry Allen and the Jan Lundgren Quartet. 10:45pm start (approx)...

The Blue of the Night with Eamonn Lenihan

This week, Carl and Eamonn feature songs by an early 18th century composer from Austria. Hear a selection of lieder, many written by a teen-age Franz Schubert, nightly from 10pm.

Tom Jobim Tribute: January 26th - February 1st

The cellist/arranger Jacques Morelenbaum and his singer/wife, Paula, were a big part of the life of Antonio Carlos Jobim (pictured), shaping the music of his last recordings. They paid a fitting tribute to “Tom” by recording an album in his Rio de Janeiro home studio - suitably titled "Casa".  We mark Tom Jobim’s birthday this week by shining the spotlight on this moving tribute with Ryucihi Sakamoto on piano and Jobim’s son Paulo on guitar.
