The Blue of the Night with Eamonn Lenihan

Anne Queffélec is an award-winning pianist. Each night this week, Carl and Eamonn will air tracks from the Parisian's new CD of early 20th century French music, Satie & Compagnie.

    Blue Tunes June 8th - 14th

Parisian Anne Queffélec - the daughter and sister of writers - is passionate about literature. That said, Anne has, from an early age, devoted her own efforts to music. She was awarded first prize at the 1968 international piano competition in Munich, and at Leeds the following year. “The piano is,” she believes, “an orchestra in miniature.” Her latest Mirare release, “Satie & Compagnie” focuses on French composers of the early 20th century.

We’ll be airing selections from the CD all this week on BLUE. Expect to hear music by Ravel, Debussy, Hahn, Poulenc, Satie and others, nightly, from 10pm.

    Enrique Granados: March 23rd - 29th

Ninety-nine years ago, while much of Europe was at war, Enrique Granados was savouring a Metropolitan Opera House premiere that was so successful that he received an invite from the White House. Triumph quickly turned to tragedy on the homeward journey across the Atlantic: Spain may have been a neutral country, but a German torpedo sunk the ship he was aboard. The self-taught composer - weighed down by the gold paid to him by the Met management - drowned in the English Channel, trying to rescue his wife. All this week, the music of Granados is featured on the programme. Listen out for performances by Julian Bream, on guitar; and jazzman Bill Evans, on piano.

    Anouar Brahem: March 30th - April 5th

Oud player Anouar Brahem has consistently produced mesmerising music for the ECM label. His latest work is no exception. Inspired by the political and social upheaval in his native Tunisia, "Souvenance" is supremely captivating and benefits from his piano based quartet along with a string orchestra. He's in the National Concert Hall next week with his quartet - so this week he is in the Blue spotlight.
