The Blue of the Shortest Night Live, Wednesday June 21st at 10pm

Carl Corcoran was joined for a very special Blue of the Shortest Night, a live concert broadcast from Studio 1 in the RTÉ Radio Centre. In association with Music Network, the Blue of the Night presented an evening of live music, showcasing some of the finest musical talent in the country.

The line-up included Baroque folk music from Sonamus, a unique combination of instruments performed by Cormac Breatnach (susato whistles), Annette Cleary (cello), Rachel Factor (harpsichord) and Eamon Sweeney (baroque guitar). A violin trio brought together Katherine Hunka, Ioana Petcu-Colan and Helena Wood for music ranging from classical to contemporary. And hailing from Béal Átha an Ghaorthaidh in the Múscraí Gaeltacht of northwest Cork sean nós singer Nell Ní Chróinín

The exceptionally talented Aoife Doyle Band starred some of the Blue's favourite jazz musicians including Aoife on vocals, Johnny Taylor (piano), Andrew Csibi (double bass) and Dominic Mullan (drums). and to round it off, The Chatham Saxophone Quartet.  All this guaranteed that this special Blue of the Shortest Night will live long in the memory.

Noel Scott Engel was one of The Walker Brothers. His 1969 solo project "Scott Walker 3" initially sold well. Hear selections from the cult CD re-issue each night this week.

Peter Delaney

Peter Delaney

Peter Delaney is that rare breed; an Irish ukulele player inspired, in equal measure, by early archive recordings of Mississippi Delta Blues and Hawaiian Luau music. His songs are gentle parables formed from slightly skewed everyday observations sustained only by voice and instrument. The result is music which is both simple and beguiling.

Louis Remembered

It's been a sad year for the music world with the loss of many iconic figures. One of our own legends, jazz guitarist Louis Stewart left us earlier this year. Louis' musical legacy is recognised and lauded in the international jazz world. At home in Ireland, where he chose to base himself even at the peak of his international fame, he became a friend and mentor to many in a burgeoning jazz community. His loss is immense. In March 2014, Louis was the featured artist on The Blue of the Night with Carl Corcoran. This special programme features many of Louis' wonderful performances and his chat with Carl, recalling his early days and the highlights of his international career.
