The Blue of the Night with Carl Corcoran

    Nightly, 10pm - 1am

    Coming up on Thursday's programme...

July 23: Tonight, Eamonn sits in for Carl to link up Patty Griffin, ahead of her September date in Dublin; a new recording of Grieg's "Lyric Pieces" by Spanish pianist Javier Perianes; jazz wunderkind Joey Alexander; part of a Shostakovich cello sonata; singer/songwriter Gwyneth Herbert (pictured), in advance of an Irish tour that starts in Wexford at the end of the month; 2 x Scott Joplin; an orchestration of Pete Townshend's "Quadrophenia"; jazz singer Helen Merrill (see BLUE TUNES, below); and guitarist Antoine Berthiaume. 10pm start...

Mon 27th - Thurs 30th July: Carl's on his holidays this week. Ellen Cranitch will be here to help us wind down with the usual blend of tasteful late-night selections, including a nightly nocturne or two (see below).

Noel Scott Engel was one of The Walker Brothers. His 1969 solo project "Scott Walker 3" initially sold well. Hear selections from the cult CD re-issue each night this week.

    Peter Delaney

Peter Delaney is that rare breed; an Irish ukulele player inspired, in equal measure, by early archive recordings of Mississippi Delta Blues and Hawaiian Luau music. His songs are gentle parables formed from slightly skewed everyday observations sustained only by voice and instrument. The result is music which is both simple and beguiling.

    Helen Merrill; July 20th - 26th

Helen Merrill (pictured) sang with Charlie Parker in the 1940s. Though her first album was arranged by Quincy Jones (and featured trumpeter Clifford Brown), this American artist has achieved greatest recognition while living in Europe and Japan. Hear Helen recorded with Gordon Beck, Stan Getz, Hank Jones et al, all this week on BLUE.

    July 27th - August 2nd

They are described as a single-movement character piece usually written for solo piano. First created by Irishman John Field – forever associated with Frederic Chopin - but the list of nocturne composers is extensive. We’ll draw from that list all week – the dictionary defines them as “inspired by, or evocative of, the night”. Nocturnes - the perfect fit for  The Blue Of The Night.
