Programme 4 - The 1980s
Listen to this programme
Tonight we hear the first computer-controlled synthesisers with 8" floppy discs: the Fairlight and the Synclavier, and Frank Zappa's pioneering use of the latter. Canadian composer Paul Dolden's 400-track 'Beyond the Walls of Jericho', a physically exhilarating multi-layered mass of sound. Pop influences in ' Vienna' by Ultravox from 1981. We explore the beginnings of the democratisation of technology and how the term 'electronic music' began to have new meanings.
