1972 brought us three iconic films. The first, the story of the Italian-American Corleone family; the second, a thriller concerning four city men who run into some unfriendly locals on a canoeing trip and the third, a musical starring Liza Minnelli set in Berlin in 1931. All three also had very memorable soundtracks. Join Aedin Gormley this afternoon for music from The Godfather, Deliverance and Cabaret celebrating their 40th birthdays.

NOVA
We continue to mark John Cage's centenary year tonight by broadcasting "the he and the she of it", a multi-layered soundscape produced by Bernard Clarke in which a voice evokes the sounds and sense of Dublin. "The he and the she of it" is a response to an invitation by the EBU's Ars Acustica group to rethink John Cage and Kenneth Patchen's radio play The City Wears A Slouch Hat, which will be broadcast first in America this coming 31st May, 70 years ago.
This week's Nova plays selections from the Ars Acustica project, including Nova's own take on "the he and the she of it" which draws out themes, ideas and sonorities and updates them to Dublin in the 21st century. In the Patchen/Cage original a Voice wanders an American city observing and participating in various nocturnal events.
In "the he and the she of it" the action happens in the daytime and excerpts from John Cage's "diary: how to improve the world (you'll only end up making it worse") act as the Voice. A little later, this voice is spoken by a woman (American composer Susan Stenger) hence the title "...every tale has a telling and that's the he and the she of it" (from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake).
