Opera Night - Vivaldi's Tito Manlio

Bernard Clarke presents Tito Manlio (RV 738) recorded at the Opera House in Cracow, Poland.

    Saturday August 8th
Bernard Clarke brings us Mozart’s much loved the Magic Flute in a performance from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, recorded in March this year. Irish soprano Sinead Mulhern (pictured) made her Royal Opera House operatic debut in the role of First Lady in this production which also includes Anna Siminska  as Queen of the Night. Pavol Breslik, Markus Werba, Christiane Karg and Georg Zeppenfeld. The Royal Opera House Orchestra and Chorus was conducted by Cornelius Meister.

    Saturday 15th August
Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera went through a troubled evolution with many rewrites, different versions, indifferent performances, bankrupted theatres and his own worsening deafness.

However the final version was successfully presented at the Kärtnertortheater in 1814 and a gala evening in September was organised for the crowned heads and leading political figures attending the Congress of Vienna to reorganise Europe after Napoleon’s abdication. With its appropriate central theme of liberation from tyranny, Fidelio has been part of the repertoire ever since.

This week’s Opera Night has a classic performance of Fidelio and includes Helga Dernesch as Leonore, Jon Vickers as Florestan, Karl Ridderbusch as Rocco, Zoltán Kelemen as Don Pizarro, and José Van Dam as Don Fernando. The Chorus of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, and the Berlin Philharmonic are conducted by Herbert von Karajan.
