The Metropolitan Opera New York Saturday Matinee Broadcasts

Launched in 1931, the Met’s Saturday matinee broadcasts are the longest-running continuous classical radio series in American broadcast history. The 87th season of Saturday broadcasts will once again be heard over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network. You can hear the 2017/18 Season every Saturday from 7pm on Opera Night and for details of the season, view their schedule here. (Please note that we will not be taking the Met broadcast of Saturday January 20th, 2018.)


Watch Again: The Big Bang - Gala launch of Irish National Opera

In tonight’s programme we celebrate the launch of Irish National Opera with the voices of leading Irish singers Orla Boylan (pictured), Claudia Boyle, Sharon Carty, Jennifer Davis, Anna Devin, Imelda Drumm, Máire Flavin, Ben McAteer, John Molloy, Miriam Murphy, Gavan Ring and Padraic Rowan. Featuring the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fergus Sheil, with music by Wagner, Catalani, Korngold, Saint-Saëns, Verdi, Gluck, Wallace, Gounod, Tchaikovsky, Giordano, Rossini, and Verdi from operas Lohengrin, La Wally, Samson et Dalila, Aida, Orfeo ed Euridice, Maritana, Roméo et Juliette, Eugene Onegin, La cenerentola, La Traviata and Falstaff. This concert was recorded at the National Concert Hall on January 9th.

Sir David McVicar’s ravishing new production offers a splendid backdrop for the soprano in the title role as the jealous prima donna Tosca: Sonya Yoncheva. Sir David McVicar’s exhilarating production of Verdi’s thrilling depiction of life on the edge features Maria Agresta as the noble heroine, Leonora, Yonghoon Lee as the troubadour who loves her, Quinn Kelsey as his rival, and Anita Rachvelishvili as the Gypsy Azucena, whose bloodthirsty curse propels the story.
