A Christmas Postcard:  Monday 18th to Friday 22nd December.


At noon every day this week we’ll have an episode from a newly commissioned series  'A Christmas Postcard: The History of the Nativity Story.The series explores the Christian story of the Nativity, through dramatisations of Biblical and medieval devotional texts, with documentary contributions and original music. You can listen back to the series by clicking on the individual images as they are broadcast each day.

The dramatisations were recorded on location at Kilcrea Abbey, County Cork.


Monday 18th December - Episode 1 – The Nativity story in the Bible and the apocrypha.

Biblical and extra-Biblical accounts of Christ’s birth and their influence on the Nativity story with dramatised passages taken from the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke, from the Douay-Rheims Bible, first published in 1582 and 1610.


Tuesday 19th December - Episode 2 – Francis of Assisi and the first crib.

The medieval beginnings of the Christmas crib with dramatised passages taken from Pseudo Bonaventure’s Meditations on the Life of Christ published in English as "St Bonaventure’s Life of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ", published by PJ Kennedy & Sons, New York, 1881.


Wednesday 20th December - Episode 3 – The Wise Men and the Feast of the Epiphany.



The origin and symbolism of the Magi with dramatised passages taken from the Gospel according to Matthew, from the Douay-Rheims Bible, first published in 1582 and 1610.


Thursday 21st December - Episode 4 – The Wise Men and the Gifts.

The practical and symbolic value of gold, frankincense and myrrh with dramatised passages are taken from Pseudo Bonaventure’s Meditations on the Life of Christ published in English as "St Bonaventure’s Life of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ", published by PJ Kennedy & Sons, New York, 1881.


Friday 22nd December - Episode 5 – The Nativity in Art.

Artistic depictions of the birth of Christ from medieval to modern times with dramatised passages taken from the gospel of Matthew and Pseudo Bonaventure’s Meditations on the Life of Christ published in English as "St Bonaventure’s Life of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ", published by PJ Kennedy & Sons, New York, 1881.
