Storyteller - Tine Thing Helseth...
The young Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth tells stories of love and loss on her solo debut CD for EMI Classics. She performs a programme of songs by Grieg, Strauss, Sibelius, Ravel, Canteloube and Weill, among others, transcribed for trumpet with either piano or orchestral accompaniment. Tine's musical collaborators are pianist Håvard Gimse and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Eivind Aadland.
"I've been playing songs in recital for two or three years now and they are always very special to me", said Tine recently. "Although you lose the words, you have to play as though they were still there. To move an audience with a very simple tune is one of the hardest things to do yet it is a wonderful feeling."
Edvard Grieg's song cycle Haugtussa, based on the epic poem cycle by the Norwegian writer Arne Garborg is at the heart of the CD. It is a favourite of Tine's and the reason she wanted her first EMI disc to feature song transcriptions. When you read the [Haugtussa] poems, there is a happy ending but, for some reason, Grieg chose to make the ending sad. All eight songs are beautiful but so different in character. The music deserves to shine by itself. Grieg is an obvious choice for a Norwegian performer but the other songs on the CD, by German, French, Russian and Czech composers, are equally compelling. The surprise on this disc is perhaps the inclusion of Epílogo (Noche de luna) by the Spanish composer José María Cano (b1959).

Marty's Guestlist...
Join Marty as he chats to the great and the good from the world of music, the arts and entertainment. It's that part of the morning when our guest becomes the presenter and chooses the music.
Listen again to Marty's chat with Grammy Award-winning composer Bill Whelan. Who spoke to Marty about his forthcoming concert on May 17th "Riverdance: The Music of Bill Whelan" with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. This concert will feature the world premiere of the Symphonic Suite from Riverdance.
Bill Whelan writes: 'The idea for a Riverdance Symphonic Suite has been on my radar for some time. Over the years I have often had requests from foreign orchestras for a full-length concert piece containing the music from the show. As my original score incorporated traditional instruments, it was not always easy to assemble the various ethnic elements for a concert in say, Japan. So what I have done with this new score is to present all the themes from Riverdance in a way that is playable by a full symphony orchestra anywhere in the world, without the traditional musicians. There were two principal challenges - the first was to arrange the themes and melodies as a colourful and dynamic concert piece. The second was to choose the instruments from within the orchestra to appropriately replace the original ethnic instruments and voices. As this will be its first performance, I look forward with anticipation as this augmented RTÉ CO under David Brophy brings the work of the last few years to life.'

Musically Speaking and What Are We Talking About Quiz?...
Every morning at about 7:10 and 7:40 we feature the now world famous Musically Speaking Quiz. How do I take part I hear you ask? All you need to do is just figure out the one word that connects the three clue words that we give out. For example if we asked you "Musically Speaking what word connects the following?" Peggy, Brenda and Hazelwood the answer is Lee. Simple!
Then after 9am we give you four words and four words only that describe a book or a film or anything really, and you must tell us what are we talking about.
For example if we were talking about the film My Fair Lady, in four words we would describe it as Flower girl Audrey blossoms, or Harry Potter - Students Take up Spelling!
We have an RTÉ lyric fm goody bag, which will include one of Martys recommended albums to give away.
