Listen back to our special New York programmes - Aedín interviews John Barry and Elaine Stritch
Listen to the John Barry programme
In a Green Room Cinema Special, Aedín Gormley travels to the New York home of renowned composer John Barry, to talk about his life, his work and the art of film-scoring.
After working on Dr. No, Barry went on to score the next eleven Bond films, and his lush, bold orchestrations certainly helped to create that distinctive Bond sound. The winner of five Oscars and four Grammys, he has written some of the most memorable movie music of our time, including Born Free, Midnight Cowboy, Goldfinger, Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves.
Aedín talks to the composer about his love of both conducting and working with orchestras, and he recalls an unhappy time on-set with Born Free and happier times on-set with Katherine Hepburn and Peter O' Toole while filming The Lion in Winter. Barry discusses film scoring today, the importance of melody and reveals the identity of his favourite Bond!
Listen to the Elaine Stritch programme
In our second Green Room Cinema Special, Aedín Gormley talks to veteran star of stage and screen Elaine Stritch.
Elaine Stritch, now 82, has been lighting up the Broadway stage for more than sixty years. Despite being nominated four times for a Tony award for Bus Stop (1956), Sail Away (1961), Company (1970) and A Delicate Balance (1996), it wasn't until her revealing one-woman show Elaine Stritch - At Liberty, that she finally got to take one home.
Elaine talks candidly to Aedín at her residence in the Hotel Carlyle, New York about her love of performing, and how at the age of 82 she has no intention of retiring. She remembers meeting Marlon Brando for the first time as a 17 year old drama student, going on a blind date with Frank Sinatra and working with Woody Allen. She also speaks very openly about her personal battle with alcoholism and her philosophies on life.
