Classical Kids

This morning we'll hear tunes for children which Tchaikovsky wrote after hearing Schumann's Album for the Young, plus Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.

You can now enjoy Classical Kids exclusively on RTÉjr Radio every Sunday morning, from 10 to 11am. To listen, you can tune in via the RTÉjr Radio channel on the Radio Player, or listen on a digital radio via the RTÉjr channel. You can also hear us via the RTÉjr website

Saturday August 28th, 7am

The English composer William Walton wrote a set of piano pieces for his niece Elizabeth to play but they were too difficult for her, so he re-wrote them as duets for her to play with her brother Michael. We'll hear some of his Music for Children this morning, including the Music Lesson, Hop-Scotch and The Three-Legged Race. We'll also hear performances by some very talented young orchestras from around the world, including the energetic Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.

Sunday September 4th, 10am

Classical Kids is going back to school this morning, with the fun Music in the Classroom series. Tune in as it rains on the string section in Plink, Plank, Plunk, and we'll meet the different sections and instruments of the orchestra playing Freres Jacques. We'll also hear music that Holst wrote for a school orchestra to play, and music written about Autumn by Vivaldi.

Sunday September 11th, 10am

This morning we'll hear music written for Giants in the Sky, with a song from Into the Woods and music by Grieg written for a fearsome Mountain King. We'll also hear fairy tales from Ravel's Mother Goose suite including Sleeping Beauty and Tom thumb, read by everyone's favourite nanny, Julie Andrews.
