Kia's new hybrid, the Niro, has been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records for the lowest ever fuel consumption figures on a drive across the United States.

The Kia Niro has only recently gone on sale and the fuel consumption figures it has achieved on a cross-country trip from Los Angeles to New York should help its fledgeling reputation greatly.

It was driven from City Hall to New York's City Hall by Wayne Gerdes and Robert Winger and they managed to coax a pretty incredible 76.6 MPG, or 3.07 litres per 100 kilometres, out of the car's petrol engine and maximise the electric battery.

The total distance involved was 3715 miles and they only filled the tank 4.1 times. Kia says the car was not modified in any way to achieve the figures.

Clearly, it would be hard to replicate these figures without a lot of homework and even more diligent driving to reduce demands on the engine, but the figures have been validated by the Guinness Book of Records.
