Karl Lagerfeld has given flat shoes his seal of approval after debuting Chanel's collection of couture running shoes at the fashion house's Paris show.

The designer explained to Bang Showbiz, "In the history of fashion, around 1800 to 1840, women had flat shoes. Even with a ball gown, they'd wear flat shoes."

At Chanel's Couture Spring/Summer '14 showcase at Paris Fashion Week earlier this week, dresses were co-ordinated with a range of sporty shoes with the aim of giving couture some flexibility.

Lagerfeld added, "I had a feeling the girls would love them. The way then ran down the staircase – I didn't even ask them, they did it naturally, because in this kind of shoe, you can do that. Coming down the staircase in platforms is very difficult and not very beautiful. It gives a new modern attitude to couture, a flexibility."
