Centra has unveiled its stylish limited edition bag for life which goes on sale throughout its 460 store network this October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The bag retails at €3 with all proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer campaign.
This year, Centra set students nationwide a challenge to come up with a super stylish design based on the iconic pinkness of the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer campaign. A host of varying creative designs were submitted by students nationwide and judged by a panel led by leading Irish fashion designer and artist Helen Steele.
19-year-old UCD student Cian Breathnach was announced as the overall winner and beat off stiff competition to have his design printed on 40,000 bags. Cian’s design is a new take on the breast cancer ribbon using typographic study words associated with breast cancer. The clean yet powerful design will generate much needed funds for the Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer programme.
Cian, from Knockbridge in Dundalk, has a strong passion for graphic design and was hugely motivated to enter the competition as his family has been personally affected by Breast Cancer with his aunt suffering from the illness. Drawing on his own experience and research Cian was able to create a unique design by making this language visible in the shape of the iconic breast cancer ribbon.
Speaking about the bag Cian said, “It’s a real achievement to be associated with such an iconic Irish brand and to see my design brought to life on a bag that people across the country will be picking up in their local shop. My aunt suffered from the breast cancer so to be able to give something back and make a difference is a real honour."
Speaking about Centra’s student design initiative Helen Steele said, “It’s great to see a brand like Centra supporting Ireland’s up and coming design talent. It’s campaigns like these that really give students a platform to show their creativity and all for such a worthy cause. Cian’s bag really stood out as his design didn’t take away from the charity element and his use of typography incorporated into the iconic breast cancer ribbon really impressed us.”
So make sure you get your hands on this must have accessory in aid of a very worthy cause in your local Centra Store. All proceeds will go to Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer.
