Go for Bold: The Statement Necklace
It looks as though big, bold statement jewellery isn't going away anytime soon, writes Georgina Heffernan. Make sure you pick up a couple of pieces this autumn.
Every so often, a new breed of accessory comes along that seems to give every outfit an edge, a je ne sais quoi element that you can’t quite put your finger on. At the minute, it’s statement necklaces and collars: whether it’s in the form of a dramatic necklace or a quirky detachable collar, if you
invest in one accessory this season, make sure it’s for your neck.
Tiny delicate jewellery it ain’t: AW12 is all about adding embellishment to your look wherever possible and a go anywhere. A piece of jazzy neckwear is an easy way to get in on the trend and add a new season edge to plain shirts and t-shirts (and jumpers when it gets chilly).
And don’t worry about fitting a specific mould with this look, as there’s a different version for almost every AW12 trend. So try out fringing, heavy metal plating, neon, beads, lace... pretty much
anything goes as long as it’s bold, eye-catching and oversized.
The look-- which was seen all over the Prada catwalk as an over-the-top embellishment - has been spotted on Alexa Chung, Kate Middleton and U.S. Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and can now be found on the high street. Plümo’s stand-out beaded version reflects the true meaning ofa statement: styled with minimal make-up, a fuss-free up-do and a plain white collared shirt, the tribal-style beads can take centre stage.
River Island and Accesorize both have cute collar-style necklaces that will take an outfit from plain to Saturday night ready, and Marks & Spencer’s sophisticated take on the trend will add a ladylike feel to your ensemble. To work the trend on a budget, Primark and Internaçionale have some seriously fierce goth-inspired versions. No matter what your personal style, a statement piece of neckwear will be the link that pulls it all together this season.
Here are a few style tips to get you started.
1. Bold and basic: A statement neckpiece makes a bold statement and shouldn't compete with the rest of your outfit. So stay away from prints or too loud patterns. Go for solid, monochromatic colours instead, to enhance the effect the neckpiece would make.
2. Less is more: With a necklace which is already bold you don't really need earrings and other chunky accessories like cuffs, hair accessories etc. as it will make the whole look very slap-dash and chaotic.
3. Stature wise: Keep your body shape in mind when you are choosing your neck-piece. Larger body types require larger pieces.
4. Be Daring: Of course, the general rule with statement jewellery is still to just wear one piece at a time, but some necklaces are meant to be layered. From studs and crosses to diamonds to cocktail rings, there's a huge array of head-turners for autumn. Wear a bib necklace over your coat for a real 'wow' factor or wear a few different necklaces with a simple dress to make a bold style statement.
