Store Alert: The Secret Closet

from: RTE Fashion Blog

On the past few occasions I had been to Howth, I had noticed The Secret Closet while walking down the towns’s Abbey St, but it wasn’t until a girl from work mentioned that her friend had bought a Chanel dress for €80 there that I put it on my ‘must-visit’ list.

The Secret Closet is a consignment boutique that offers gently used designer clothing, shoes and accessories at a fraction of their retail price. Customers drop in pieces which they no longer wear, which are then sold on and the profit is shared 50/50. I have noticed a few of these places around Dublin, such as the fabulous Green With Envy store in Rathmines , and have always thought it’s a great way to offload some of your unloved pieces, while maybe picking up a bargain.

When I finally got the chance to pop in to The Secret Closet last Sunday, I was absolutely blown away with the selection and quality of the stock on display. There is a ground floor which has a selection of tops and jackets mainly, but it’s the upstairs two rooms that really delight. One is filled on every side with rails and rails of dresses, with designer shoes dotted around the corners, while the second room has outerwear.

I was in a bit of a rush so didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked perusing the rails, but in the time I had in there I found five dresses that I hurriedly tried on.

The first dress – a leopard print chiffon Dolce and Gabbana number – was just gorgeous, flirty, and feminine and could be toughened up with a leather jacket and ankle boots. It came with a €199 price tag, I’d imagine this would have cost the guts of €1000 when new. I also tried on a beautiful John Rocha purple silk dress, which I loved, and was only €78.

The dress I left behind….sob!

Asides from those two gems, I spotted a number of classic Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dresses (around the €150 mark) numerous pairs of Christian Louboutin heels (I think around €200) and a Gucci dress with the tags on for just €250.

There are cheaper items on display too, I saw a beautiful pair of red LK Bennett heels with a cute bow around the ankle for just €49, and many of the dresses came under €100 too.

With three weddings to go to this summer, I’ll definitely be making a return visit sooner rather than later!
