With the likes of the Powerscourt Shopping Centre, the uber-hip Blind Tiger store and celeb salon Brown Sugar lining its path, Dublin's South William Street has long been a must-visit for savvy shoppers.
Celebrating its first year in business, Irish designer collective Project 51, has helped turn this street, which was mostly a wholesale area, into one of the most fashionable districts in Dublin.
“South William Street is buzzing with creative talent,” says Terri McInerney, retail manager of Project 51. ” The street was always filled with the business end of the Rag Trade and now it is being reclaimed. It’s time for the rebirth of South William St once again as the Fashion Center of Dublin.”
The project is set to change the face of Dublin's fashion industry by showcasing the designs of some of Ireland’s most promising new talent.
“If you’ve not visited Project 51 before, it’s quite a unique space. The studios and showrooms are housed in a massive old Georgian building and many of our designers have studios in the building. It’s a great advantage, because we have direct feedback from the customers to the designers, and many clients loved to get really involved in the design process- especially if they are having something custom made for themselves.”
“We have something to suit every taste and budget,” says Terri. “Jennifer Rothwell creates the kind of classic, beautiful eveningwear that most women would love to wear but the difference is that her fabrics are always very unique. On the other hand, Clara Bella’s directional cuts and off-beat tailoring would certainly be on the advant guarde end of the scale.”
At the moment, the studio is showcasing some of Cork’s finest designers and crafts-people as part of their ‘Peoples Republic of Cork’ exhibition but, following that, Project 51 will unveil their autumn/winter collection. “We are very excited about the new season,” Terri admits. “We have lots of new designers coming on board, such as Honor Fitzsimons and Ellie Walsh, and will be unveiling their new ranges as part of The Dublin Fashion Festival. Expect great things...”
