A crisp white shirt: it's the wardrobe essential that can take you from office to bar in the blink of an eye. Georgina Heffernan tells you how to wear this wardrobe classic.

Q. I’ve often read that a simple white shirt is one of those fashion basics that every woman should own. Any suggestions on ways to wear them?

A. When it comes to classic fashion, the white shirt - clean, crisp and timeless - is hard to beat. That’s probably because a traditional button down shirt will give your wardrobe a lift while maintaining a neutral style that will blend with anything.

If you are like most women, your closet is currently filled with black and grey basics and - although they have served us well during the cold winter months - they need to be replaced with something a little brighter come spring - and this is where the white shirt really comes into its own.

This season they’ve taken on a modern edge and are being teamed with everything from brightly coloured cigarette pants to wildly printed skirts. Jil Sander gives the white shirt a modern twist with full sleeves and dropped shoulders, while Christopher Kane opted for sheer fabrics and feminine details.

If you are not sure how to wear one, look no further than supermodel Christy Turlington, who regularly teams hers with a pair of jeans, or Carolina Herrera who is rarely seen without her unofficial uniform of black pencil skirt, heels and a white shirt .

Every girl should have a plain white shirt in her wardrobe - and this season there’s a style on the high street to suit everyone.
