Now's the time to start thinking about those New Year fashion resolutions. Georgina Heffernan shares some advice on how to make 2013 your most stylish year yet!

Q. I started the New Year with the best of intentions; I wanted to give myself an image overhaul, shape up and really take charge of my life. But now, as January is slipping away, I’m beginning to feel totally overwhelmed because I haven’t stuck to even one of my New Year resolutions. Help!

A. Before you start beating yourself up, take a deep breath and think mini-makeover instead. More than three quarters of people who give up on their resolutions are doomed to fail because they try to make over-ambitious changes, so, why not take little steps towards your goal to make the whole process less intimidating – and more achievable. Making a resolution doesn't have to be all about quitting. Whether it's stocking up the beauty cabinet or adding to your wardrobe, overindulge your favourite habits instead and make 2013 your most beautiful year yet.

The 2013 Style Commandments

THOU SHALT Be realistic. There comes a time when you realise that the super skinny jeans you wore in 1990 are probably never going to fit you again. But don’t let that get you down because there are many more ways to look sexy than a pair of sprayed on denims.

THOU SHALT Throw out your towering stilettoes and buy a pair of ladylike heels. Sexy ’90s pointy heels are back and have been modernized with everything from dainty ankle straps to cylindrical heels. Extra cool points if you wear them with slouchy boyfriend jeans or Bermuda shorts to brunch with the girls

THOU SHALT NOT Hang on to clutter. The key to transforming your look is to start by getting rid of all the stuff that has been languishing at the back of your closet for God knows how long. Question closely the presence of anything you haven’t worn for over two years. Is it really something you will ever wear again? Will it ever fit you again? Did I actually wear that? I don’t care what excuse you come up with, if you want look up to date, you have to ditch those fashion disasters once and for all.

THOU SHALT January needs to be about a reality check. Clear out the old to bring in the new. Give yourself a goal so for every three pieces you throw-out, treat yourself to something new."

THOU SHALT Try something different whether it's adding colour, wearing prints, or choosing a bold necklace. You don't have to spend a fortune to update your look.

THOU SHALT NOT Ignore your body shape. Looking great is not just about wearing the right clothes: It's about wearing the clothes that are right for your body shape. Have you ever noticed that some women never have a fashion disaster and always seem to be effortlessly stylish? Take a closer look and you may notice that those whose sartorial sense you admire often wear the same style over and over. Love handles, muffin tops and bingo wings... all wobbly bits that can be minimised with clever styling

THOU SHALT Learn how to use colour. Light colours are your highlighters, so wear a piece of nude clothing over a feature you like! If you have a thick or full waist, and you want to wear a nude coloured top or dress, make sure you balance out the look with a belt around the torso or/and a dark coloured jacket on top.

THOU SHALT Give your image a new lease of life by updating your hairstyle. One good thing about the recession is that hairdressers have slashed their prices. So what are you waiting for? Time to ditch the boring brown bob and go for something a little more adventurous...

THOU SHALT Look after your skin - cleanse, tone, moisturise and exfoliate. Always use a really high sun protection factor to protect your skin from the sun and premature ageing.
