Q. I love Victoria Beckham’s designer label, but with prices of 500 euro and over, I can’t afford one of her to-die-for dresses. Where can I find something similar at a fraction of the cost?
A. When Victoria Beckham launched her fashion line in 2008; few predicted that it would become the runaway success that it has. Initially it was met with derision, ridicule and sneers from the fashion elite – Irish designer, Paul Costelloe, suggested the former Spice Girl should stick to the singing.
Fast forward a few short years and she has confounded her critics with a signature look that’s hard to ignore - her strong tailoring and sleek form fitting shapes - have made Victoria the darling of the fashion world.
In just four years, Victoria snapped up the award for British Designer of the Year in 2011 – and she has gone from producing 400 pieces in 9 retail stores to 5,000 pieces in more than 30 outlets worldwide; not bad for the girl who was universally mocked for being the least talented Spice Girl.
Of course we love her fabulous frocks but, my, they are a little expensive (some pieces cost two and a half thousand euro!) so, my answer to your question ’Is it possible to recreate Victoria’s designer look on a shoestring?’ is yes - but you need to know what you are looking for.
Victoria Beckham blue collar dress, €1695 at Brown Thomas
My advice would be to shop for body con styles in block colours. Her recent collection featured cap sleeves and cute collars with military embellishments. Finish your look with a slick ponytail, shades, a pair off killer heels, oh, and don’t forget to pout.
What to look for:
Fabrics: Dense rib jersey and heavy canvas.
Details: Polo collars and stripe detail.
