They're a wardrobe staple, but finding the perfect pair of jeans can be a nightmare. Georgina Heffernan helps make sure you find the perfect style to suit your shape.
Q. I have about 20 pairs of jeans hanging in my wardrobe – but I’ve yet to find a style that fits and flatters my figure. Have you any tips for finding the right pair of denims?
A. Every woman, no matter what her age or shape, needs the perfect jeans - a take-anywhere pair that can be dressed up with heels and a sexy top for a night on the town, or alternatively worn with trainers and a t-shirt for a day lounging around the house.
Since the turn of the 20th century, jeans have quickly been adopted as one of the icons of fashion and from cowboys to hippies they have become an absolute must-have, the backbone of our wardrobes. But why is finding the right pair be such a nightmare?
High-waisted or low rise, flare or straight leg, dark or faded. With so many styles to choose from, finding your perfect pair of jeans may seem impossible. Here are some helpful tips to make sure the next pair of jeans you buy spends more time hanging from your hips than from your closet hanger.
FLARES: Beyonce loves flared styles - the pop singer knows that the wide-leg denims flatter a pear-shape frame. The flare balances out wide hips and chunky thighs, making you look slimmer.

BOYFRIEND: Baggy cuts are ideal. Perfect for slouching around, team with a vest or crisp white shirt. They also flatter a fuller figure.
STRAIGHT LEG: With her endless legs, 6ft supermodel Elle Macpherson is often photographed wearing straight leg jeans. Her denim choice is Bettino Liano. If, like Elle, you're also blessed with pins up to your chin but you have difficulty finding a pair that doesn't swing around your ankles, check out Topshop and H&M, which both cater for tall women.
HIGH WAISTED: Conceal your jelly belly with high-waisted jeans.

BOOTCUT: If you also have a petite frame, go for a snug boot-cut to make your legs look longer. Both M&S and Dorothy Perkins have a great selection. The slight flare will also balance out bigger hips, giving you a slimmer outline. Wear with wedges and a smock top for a stylish 70s look.
SKINNY: This firm favourite of Kate Moss should only be worn if you have super-slim thighs.
