Recently described as one of hot new talents in the Irish fashion industry, Lorna Burton is certainly one to watch. Georgina Heffernan caught up with the handbag designer to get the lowdown on her career.
Georgina Heffernan: Did you always want to design bags?
Lorna Burton: I always wanted to design. I began designing clothes, moving towards footwear and finally ending with handbags. Handbags definitely captured my heart.
What's the inspiration behind your creations?
I’m inspired by everything; mostly I find my love in historic costume and buildings. My latest A/W 2012 Collection is inspired by 13th century warrior princesses and their armour.
Where did you learn your craft?
I studied my Higher Diploma in Fashion Design at BIFE, and then continued my studies at the West Wales School of the Arts and later at the London College of Fashion.
Who is your favourite designer and why?
I’m a huge fan of Viktor & Rolf, Sonia Rykiel and Vivienne Westwood, each of them portray an inspired uniqueness.
Was it tough getting started in business?
Hard work and gruelling hours are always tough but your love for what you do and your belief in its creation makes it worthwhile.
What has been your greatest achievement in your career to date?
My greatest achievement in my career was my most recent, being chosen for ‘Irish Designers Create’ in Brown Thomas. I’ll never forget that phone call from Eddie Shanahan.
Have you had to streamline your business as a result of the recession? How has it impacted you and your peers in the fashion industry?
I think you just become more conscious, therefore make wiser decisions.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I enjoy every aspect of my job; I wake up smiling knowing that I dreamed an extraordinary dream and now graciously get to live it.
Where do you see the brand going in the future?
This Autumn CoraLlei will be available internationally via the online store, a very exciting step for the brand. I’m looking forward to its future and its endless possibilities.
