RTÉ schedules on both radio and television for the week of the commemoration were dominated by two major elements: live coverage of the 1966 ceremonies, and programming that sought to recreate or reflect on the events of 1916.
The Outside Broadcast Units from radio and television covered twelve of the commemorative ceremonies which had been arranged for the fiftieth anniversary of the Rising. RTÉ audiences could experience all the major events from the opening to the closing ceremony.
The main drama series, "Insurrection", was one of the most ambitious projects attempted by Telefís Éireann since its inception at the end of 1961. This series presented a dramatic reconstruction of Easter Week 1916, telling the story of the Rising as it might have been covered by an Irish television service at the time.
Both radio and television attempted to capture "the
authentic voice of the 1916 generation". On Radio
Éireann, the series, "The Week of the Rising",
used the voices of participants to recall day by day
what happened during Easter Week 1916. On Telefís
Éireann, the series, "On Behalf of the Provisional
Government", created portraits of the seven signatories
to the proclamation through interviews with relatives
of the men, and with those who had fought alongside
them.
