1916 Golden Jubilee Celebrations Filmed in Colour

Opening Cerememony De Valera Aiseiri

In 1966, Telefis Éireann, in common with most other broadcasting services, was still transmitting in black-and-white.

In the case of the 1916 commemorations, however, television producer Micheal Johnston organised that the celebrations would also be shot on colour film, for the archives of RTÉ.

In Dublin, RTÉ cameramen, Stuart Hetherington, Godfrey Graham and Will Warham, shot footage of the official public ceremonies on 16mm colour film. Cameramen were also engaged to shoot colour film from parades and events outside Dublin.

There is a tendency to think of the past in black and white. Presented here for the first time are edited excerpts of the colour film.

The footage was shot without sound.
