What We Do - RTÉ Radio Libraries and Archives

Archives Archives Archives

RTÉ Radio Libraries and Archives captures, catalogues and stores current radio output in digital format. RTÉ Radio Libraries and Archives is also developing a dedicated restoration and conservation facility to oversee the safe transfer of sound recordings from legacy formats.

These formats include acetate and vinyl discs, as well as various forms of analogue and digital tape. Since 2000, this material is being selected, digitised, restored, catalogued and archived on both CD and Digital Linear Tape.

RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta has digitised all of its analogue tape from 1972 to 1998 and is currently archiving current output on CD. Plans are advanced to provide listening copies of all its broadcast archive through collaborations with Irish research institutions. In February 2005 an extensive collection was donated to the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum.

Listeners to RTÉ Radio hear material from the archives used in a wide range of programmes. The long-running 'Bowman Saturday 8.30', and the newer 'What If' and 'On This Day' programmes all use material from the archives.

A range of published material from RTÉ Radio Libraries and Archives can be purchased from Our Products including Seamus Ennis's 'Return from Fingal'; 'Ulysses', the celebrated radio dramatisation of James Joyce's novel; and 'Blasket Island Reflections', a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the abandonment of the islands .
