RTÉ Stills Library holds an estimated 2.8 million photographic images acquired from a number of sources. Photographs taken by RTÉ photographers include images of presenters, guests and the staff involved in the production of RTÉ Television and Radio programmes. Over the years these photographers also covered Irish social, historical and political events.
Alongside this material, RTÉ Stills Library holds a number of historically important collections that date from the early twentieth century. These collections cover a wide range of social and political events such as the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the Civil War, the visit of George V to Ireland and the 1932 Eucharistic Congress.
Original images are held in a different formats including glass plates, lantern slides, negatives, 35mm slides, digital, and both colour and black-and-white prints.
RTÉ Stills Library digital images are stored in either JPEG or TIFF formats. Over 70,000 of these digitised images have been catalogued so far. These are available to search, view and order on RTÉ's Online Photographic Archive.
RTÉ Stills Library holdings consist of seven major collections of photographic images spanning Irish events and personalities from every decade of the twentieth century.
