In June 1963, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the great-grandson of an Irish emigrant, became the first serving U.S. President to visit Ireland. As part of his 1963 European tour, President Kennedy spent four days in Ireland, visiting Dublin, Wexford, Cork, Galway and Limerick.

Providing television and radio coverage of the presidential visit was a daunting task for RTÉ. The fledgling television station, Telifis Éireann, broadcast over fourteen hours of the visit live, while Radio Éireann provided similar coverage for listeners. At RTÉ headquarters in Montrose, facilities were made available for the many international broadcasters covering the visit.

The clips presented here from the archives of RTÉ offer a chance to sense the excitement the visit of the U.S. President generated throughout Ireland. The radio clips are taken from the recorded live commentary of the visit.
The television clips are taken from 'Welcome Mr President', a Telefis Éireann programme of highlights, which was broadcast a month after the presidential visit.
